Claim
Forest restoration is increasingly constrained not by the ability to observe forests, but by the ability to operationally coordinate action at scale: deciding what needs to be done, where, when, by whom, with what resources, and how to measure outcomes over decades.
The opportunity may be to build an AI-powered operational intelligence platform for forests — similar in spirit to what Pelico does for industrial/manufacturing operations. The "factory" is now the forest ecosystem: a distributed, long-horizon production system with many independent actors, physical constraints, and a very long feedback loop between action and outcome.

Why this framing, not "another monitoring company"
Remote sensing, satellite imagery, and ecological monitoring have improved rapidly over the last decade. It is easier than ever to see what state a forest is in. It is much less obvious that the same progress has been made on the execution side: turning an observation ("this parcel needs thinning" / "natural regeneration failed here") into coordinated action across landowners, contractors, funders, and public institutions, tracked over the 10-30 year horizon restoration actually requires.
If that's true, building yet another observation/monitoring layer competes in an increasingly crowded and commoditizing space, while the operational coordination layer is comparatively unaddressed. See the key question for how we intend to test this rather than assume it.
Potential value if the thesis holds
- Reduce uncertainty in restoration planning and execution.
- Reduce the coordination overhead of running multi-stakeholder, multi-year projects.
- Make forest restoration projects more executable (things actually happen on schedule) and more investable (funders can underwrite outcomes with more confidence).
- Connect fragmented stakeholders — see stakeholders — around a shared operational picture: landowners, municipalities, forestry experts, contractors, funders, public institutions, researchers.
What would falsify this
This thesis predicts that when we talk to people who run restoration projects, the sharpest pain point they describe will be about coordinating people, resources, and timelines — not about not knowing what state the forest is in. If interviews instead surface financing or measurement as the dominant pain point, that's evidence against operational orchestration being the bottleneck, and should update the hypotheses log accordingly rather than being explained away.
