The Key Question

The knowledge base exists to answer one question honestly, before we build anything:

Is the main bottleneck in forest restoration today knowledge, measurement, financing, or operational orchestration?

Working hypothesis​

Measurement and observation are improving rapidly (remote sensing, satellite imagery, ecological monitoring). The missing layer is operational execution: coordinating fragmented actors and resources over long time horizons.

Why this question, and why now​

If the bottleneck is:

  • Knowledge — the constraint is scientific/technical understanding of what interventions work where. Points toward research partnerships, not a software company.
  • Measurement — the constraint is observation and monitoring quality. This space is comparatively well-served and getting better fast (satellite, LiDAR, drones); likely a commoditizing layer, not a durable opportunity.
  • Financing — the constraint is capital availability or the ability to structure investable projects (carbon/biodiversity credits, blended finance). Points toward a fintech/market-structuring opportunity, possibly downstream of an operational layer rather than a substitute for one.
  • Operational orchestration — the constraint is coordinating fragmented actors (landowners, contractors, funders, public institutions) over decades, with accountability for outcomes. This is the thesis in opportunity thesis, and the one we think is least served today.

The first mission of this knowledge base is to collect evidence for or against this hypothesis — through interviews, market research, and direct study of restoration workflows — rather than assume it and go build.
